The photography of Thomas Prior is primarily focused on simplicity, light, and colour. After winning a drawing contest at age 13, he decided to buy a Pentax K1000 and do Magnum-style photos, since those were the only examples he could find. Later on, he became an assistant for fashion photographers Luis Sanchis and Jason Nocito. That’s where his behind-the-scenes photos were taken, which are often featured on his blog.
Prior puts a great distance between him and his subject, because he does not believe in the idea that photographers have to observe their subjects for a while before shooting. According to himself, his best pictures are usually taken within the first 3 or 4 days of a project. Prior likes his people awkward and his landscapes ordered. That’s probably why many of his photos show people with a thirst for adrenaline. Think cliff divers, salt flat racers, etc.
